The devastating 2024 El Niño event has triggered one of the most extreme droughts in 40 years, impacting nearly half of Zimbabwe's population—7.6 million people, including 3.5 million children. The situation is even more dire in rural areas, affecting 5.9 million people compared to 1.7 million in urban centres. Projections suggest that during the peak hunger period from January to April 2025, the number of food-insecure individuals could double from 4.1 million to 7.6 million.
